Computers :: essays research papers
Computers Computer are electronic device that can receive a set of instructions, or program, and then carry out a program by performing calculations on numbered data or by compiling and correlating other forms of information. The old world of technology could not believe about the making of computers. Different types and sizes of computers find uses throughout our world in the handling of data including secret governmental files and making banking transactions to private household accounts. Computers have opened up a new world in manufacturing through the developments of automation, and they have made modern communication systems. They are great tools in almost everything you want to do research and applied technology, including constructing models of the universe to producing tomorrow's weather reports, and their use has in itself opened up new areas of development. Database services and computer networks make available a great variety of information sources. The same new designs also make possible ideas of privacy and of restricted information sources, but computer crime has become a very important risk that society must face if it would enjoy the benefits of modern technology. Two main types of computers are in use today, analog and digital, although the term computer is often used to mean only the digital type. Everything that a digital computer does is based on one operation the ability to determine if a switch, or gate is open or closed. That is, the computer can recognize only two states in any of its microscopic circuits on or off, high voltage or low voltage, orââ¬âin the case of numbersââ¬â0 or 1. The speed at which the computer performs this simple act, however, is what makes it a marvel of modern technology. Computer speeds are measured in megaHertz, or millions of cycles per second. A computer with a "clock speed" of 10 mHzââ¬âa fairly representative speed for a microcomputerââ¬âis capable of executing 10 million discrete operations each second. Business microcomputers can perform 15 to 40 million operations per second, and supercomputers used in research and defense applications attain speeds of billions of cycles per second. Digital computer speed and calculating power are further enhanced by the amount of data handled during each cycle. If a computer checks only one switch at a time, that switch can represent only two commands or numbers; thus ON would symbolize one operation or number, and OFF would symbolize another. By checking groups of switches linked as a unit, however, the computer increases the number of operations it can recognize at each cycle. The first adding machine, a precursor of the digital computer, was

Physical Development in Middle Adulthood Paper Essay
As the human body ages and reaches a point where it is no longer growing and changing due to hormones, it slowly starts to change in other ways. Age starts to take its toll much earlier on the body than most people think. Physical, mental and emotional changes are being made in the middle parts of an adultââ¬â¢s life. The midpoint of a personââ¬â¢s life is a period from age 35 to 64, and it is referred to as middle adulthood. Webster defines middle as ââ¬Å"equal distance from beginning to the endâ⬠and the word adult is a person who is ââ¬Å"fully grown or developedâ⬠(Dictionary 2010). Combining these words is like saying that an individual is half way through with his/her life. Many individuals have achieved happiness by this point in their lives. However, there is some who feel like they are closer to death without accomplishing anything. Middle adulthood brings about many changes and stresses to deal with daily. How an individual handles these issues determines if he or she achieves total happiness with their self. Middle adulthood is the time in life where individuals experience extreme amounts of responsibilities that could include the caring of aging parents or children (Dacey et al., 2009). Menopause is a womanââ¬â¢s first sign of aging that usually starts with a few years of turning 50 (Myers, 2008). Menopause is a very strenuous time in a womanââ¬â¢s life, with so many hormonal changes that can upset a womanââ¬â¢s normal balance of life. Physical symptoms of menopause are mood swings, emotional outbursts, hot flashes, and insomnia. There are available medications to help with the effects that occur during menopause. Health problems that evoke during these periods are Hypertension, asthma, arthritis, rheumatism and the metabolism starts to slow down. With hypertension (high blood pressure) affects 40% of adults in the United States being more prevalent among African Americans and poor people (Papalia et al., 2007). This disorder leads to individuals having heart attacks and strokes. Having blood pressures screenings can detect this disorder, and it can be treated effectively with medication. The three leading causes of death for individuals between the ages of 35 and 54 are cancer being number one, 2nd heart disease, and 3rd accidents. Womenââ¬â¢s hormonal changes are known as menopause and are a decrease in the productionà of estrogen. Male climacteric is a decrease in sex hormones. Both middle age men and women go through hormonal changes and physical developments. Both genders might expectance emotions of anxiety, nervousness, fatigue and decrease in sexual desires. As both genders began get older, their hair begins to get thinner and gray and get start getting wrinkles. While this makes most men appear attractive, it is viewed as unattractiveness or over the hill for women. According to Erik Ericksonââ¬â¢s stages of psychosocial development Generativity is the stage of middle adulthood the particular age is debatable, some sources identify the period between age 25 to 45, others identify the period between 45 to 65, generativity is particularly characterized by an individualââ¬â¢s turning from self-centered objectives and becoming more interested and concerned with others, including a desire to nurture, care for, inspire and support others, their object can be within their own family or encompass their community and even encompass society as a whole. Middle adulthood is the time when interest shifts from self to others, it is the time of reflection Sexual development progresses throughout adulthood. Several elements such as pregnancy, chronic illness, stress, and the usual aging process affect adult sexuality. Adult men and women go through many physical and psychological changes as they age that can affect sexual relations and sexuality. In general, health and wellness has a significant effect on sexual development in middle aged men and women. Adult men and women that go through a decrease in sexual activity could profit from many treatments. Such treatments include hormone replacement therapy (HRT), selective enzyme inhibitors (Cialis, Viagra), 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (Proscar, Adodant), and sex therapy. Adult men normally have a decrease in testosterone production after the age of 25 or so. Testosterone levels are lower which can lead to a lack of sexual passion and complications performing erection. Sexual function in men who are middle age and older is very common. Adult women, typically between the ages of 45 and 60, menstrual periods stop, this is called menopause, and the ovaries stop generating the hormone estrogen. Menopause affects sexuality which can cause vaginal dryness and tenderness and reduces sexual cravings. Eating a proper diet, avoiding smoking and getting regular exercise allows many adults to continue sexualà desires and relationships during the course of their life cycle. Sexual partners that uphold open communication along with proper treatment of medical conditions can allow older adults keep affection part of life into older age. The changes in life can be many, and can often be terrifying for an adult to go through, not to mention stressful. Many adults going through this period tend to find outlets and ways to go about dealing with these changes, often referred to as a ââ¬Å"mid-life crisisâ⬠, which allow them to put off feeling like their lives are already over, or allow them to come to terms with growing older and allowing them to feel more at peace with it. Conclusively, it is noted in many places that ââ¬Å"Old is beautifulâ⬠or ââ¬Å"40 is the new 20â⬠, so perhaps people have found healthy outlets to allow them to be happier with being older. Global Climate Changes Happen - 1630 Words
Global climate changes happen. This however is not always the best thing though. When some people think of the terms ââ¬Å"global climate changeâ⬠, they think of just a temperature change and not always the bad things that can happen to our environment and living things as well. There are many things that cause the climate changes. I want to talk about three reasons that climate change happens. First, you have the ââ¬Å"greenhouse effectâ⬠, which is warm air being trapped in the lower atmosphere. Secondly, the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, increases carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The third issue is deforestation, or the clearing of land and burning of forests. How are all three of these issues impacting our environment? The Earth is becoming warmer which can hurt certain places and animals who cannot adapt to the warmer weather. With more heat comes more evaporation causing the sea levels to rise. Also, farms are being hurt to not being able to successfully grow a lot of the things that they are used to growing with their climate. Some crops cannot live in warmer temperatures but instead need cooler climates. While the Earth is heating up, these crops are having a lot of difficulty surviving. I feel that the United States could be doing a lot more to help prevent the climate changes. Producing oil and coal to better our economy seems to be the main focus rather than making the changes necessary to take some effective action. The Satanic Verses, Truth And Falsity - 999 Words
Through the violent deaths and hypocrisy, doubt in the sacred is reintroduced. Eileen Barker illustrates brainwashing as the ââ¬Ëcontrol the religious leaders have exerted over their followersââ¬â¢. This questions whether belief is imposed or cultivated. John Updike writes that ââ¬ËEverything seemed still in place, yet something was immensely wrongââ¬â¢. Highlighting the sense of doubt in postmodernist texts, one may find that some things, such as religion, cannot be explained. Faith can waver or hold steadfast, characters revisiting belief in skepticism as ideology falters. In The Satanic Verses, truth and falsity is ultimately ambiguous. Some characters are featured as wrestling with religious doubt, others like Gibreel and Saladin think over their atheism after supernatural events. Definition is resisted, borders blurred, it is questionable whether events are happening or merely figments of imagination. Gibreel asks for ââ¬Ësome signââ¬â¢(30) that God is presen t during his illness, but realizes he is talking to air. He ââ¬Ëlost his faithââ¬â¢(29) and even after metamorphosis, it is revealed that Gibreel is schizophrenic. The metamorphosis may be invented, as Rekha says to Gibreel ââ¬Ëmaybe you are going crazyââ¬â¢(7), but he is seen by several others to levitate. Illustrating the struggle between the real and imaginary, miracles are doubted, neither denied nor confirmed. 9/10 ââ¬â 9/14 P.1 Neuman AP Euro Ch.9/10 Review Questions Kagan Western Heritage 8th edition Chapter 9 (1300-1527) 1. What were the underlying and precipitating causes of the Hundred Yearsââ¬â¢ War? What advantages did each side have? Why were the French able to drive the English almost entirely out of France? The first underlying and precipitating cause of the Hundred Yearsââ¬â¢ War was that England and France were too closely proximate emergent territorial powers. Another cause of the Hundred Yearsââ¬â¢ War was that Edward III of England was a vassal of Philip the Fair of France, and therefore held several sizeable French territories as fiefs. Also one of the underlying and precipitating causes of the Hundred Yearsââ¬â¢ was the quarrel betweenâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦How did the kings attack the church in this period? Contrast these events with ones in earlier ones in which the pope dominated rulers. The kings were able to control the church because the society had lost faith in the church due to the Black Death. Kings attacked the church by taxing them and controlling who the head clergy were. In older times there was no questioning of the church, so it was believed that if you prayed enough your ascension was inevitable, so if the king spoke up over the church then the church would excommunicate them and tell them they were going to hell. But when the Black Death struck, the first reaction was that if you prayed then you would be spared but that wasnââ¬â¢t the case because even some popes contracted the bubonic plagued. Faith was lost in the church. Chapter 10 1. Discuss Jacob Burkhardtââ¬â¢s interpretation of the Renaissance. What criticisms have been leveled against it? How would you define renaissance in the context of fifteenth and sixteenth-century Italy? Burkhardtââ¬â¢s interpretation of the renaissance implied that society was evolving in such a superior intellectual way that made Italians seem like a super race ââ¬Å"full, whole nature of mankindâ⬠was achieved by the Italians, implying that no other race was too mediocrely advanced that they couldnââ¬â¢t even be called man. Oââ¬â¢connorââ¬â¢s A Good Man Is Hard To Find Free Essays
From the title of the story itself, I was already expecting the plot to be showing the negative side of the characters. True enough, the characters involved seem to be downplaying their positive side as persons and indeed thrive on the conflicts their circumstances brought them. Every step along the way is a test of the family memberââ¬â¢s character. Being a classic story most often included in the studies of the young (in school), I was expecting a rather conservative storyline instead of a violent one. So it was with great surprise for me that the story ended with less to be desired. Even if I was preparing myself to be open-minded in reading materials such as these, I still canââ¬â¢t help feeling bad about the outcome of the story. It definitely changes my perception of things. The story reminds me that indeed, there is always a good and a bad side in every person. When the grandmother touches the ââ¬Å"Misfitâ⬠before she was killed, I believe she was then showing compassion and forgiveness to the person in question. It could also be an appeal to spare her life. However, I wish to reiterate that after all the experiences the grandmother must have gone through, she can already see through a personââ¬â¢s true self, and perhaps, just perhaps, she has seen the goodness of the killer inspite of it all. On the other hand, the Misfit also showed a willingness to be humane when he recognized the possibility of the grandmother becoming good in the true sense of the word, if only she can be reminded all the time. I believe the Misfitââ¬â¢s sentence was a metaphor. How to cite Oââ¬â¢connorââ¬â¢s A Good Man Is Hard To Find, Papers

Media Representation Reflection Paper free essay sample
The representations of drug users in the shows ââ¬Å"Breaking Badâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s Always Sunny in Philadelphiaâ⬠show the stereotypes of the modern day drug users from two different genre perspectives. In ââ¬Å"Breaking Badâ⬠, the show uses a dramatic up-front approach to show the horrors of meth use. It portrays the meth addicted parents as horrible degenerates of society. All they are focused on are drugs and how to acquire their next fix. The main female character in the episode is a meth addicted mother that experiences a role conflict when she has to decide to either take care of her son or cater to her addiction. The episode shows a highly graphic portrayal of the insanity of addiction. As the couple fights, chooses drugs over their child, and eventually the woman kills her partner and steals his drugs. On the other side of the equation the episode portrays, Jesse, one of the shows main characters as a sympathetic figure. We will write a custom essay sample on Media Representation Reflection Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page He is a drug dealer that is getting a revenge on the two customers that robbed him of an ounce of methamphetamine. Upon entering the ram shackled house he stumbles upon a child living in horrible conditions. He feeds the child and takes care of him until the two meth addicted parents show up. Although he uses strong language with them and threatens them with a gun, I always felt like he was the ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠guy in the situations. That is because the episode shows his depth of character and his compassion towards the child. He is also caught up in a role conflict as he is supposed to be a badass drug dealer with no conscience but he also is a human being with morals. He ends up calling the cops and putting the child outside which I assume saves the child. We see him as the hero in the show. In ââ¬Å"Its Always Sunny in Philadelphiaâ⬠, the show uses a comedic slant to stereotype crack use and poverty in general. It portrays drug users as lazy, homeless people that are living off the government. Ignoring responsibility and getting high in the middle of the afternoon. It is a highly generalized depiction that exploits a serious issue for comedic value. Crackheads have almost become a comedic meme in society today. Their behavior is so off the wall and shocking that as a society as a whole we choose to deal with it with humor. Both of the shows portrayals of drug use represent that social construction of the drug addict in modern society. This depiction is based on the hardcore addicts living in rock bottom addiction. In my addiction I showed some of the characteristics shown in the shows and I know many people who also fell into this description. Although it does use the worst addicts to describe addiction in general, I feel like Breaking Bad does an honest job of showing the shocking disease of meth addiction. I feel like ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s Always Sunny in Philadelphiaâ⬠is more of a biased approach and really undermines the seriousness of the issue. It is a comedy show, however, and it delivers as a hilarious episode. The perception I had growing up and mainstream society still has of an addict is one that permeates throughout these shows. In my opinion drugs should be legalized and harm reduction should be the new frontier of the drug issue. The media, however, perpetuates fear in their portrayal of addiction using all genres and keeps the mainstream public in the dark about the real issues. It keeps the prohibition line of thinking as the prevailing solution for drug use and keeps the drug war going.
